The deadline for the 2008 Form TD F 90-22.1, that is.
This doesn’t mean postmarked by today. It means:
Your. FBAR. Must. Be. In. Detroit. Today.
That’s the way the foreign bank account reporting deadline works. Tax returns are simple. Get them postmarked by the filing deadline. You’re fine.
The law is different for the Form TD F 90-22.1. There the law requires that it physically be in Detroit by the filing deadline. Kinda hard if you’re upcountry in Burkina Faso.
Funny sidenote. If you mail your income tax return in to the regular IRS service center — Ogden, Austin, Fresno, whatever — they open your envelope, keep the envelope with your tax return, and process things accordingly. Contrast that to Detroit. There, they open your envelope, throw away your envelope, and process your Form TD F 90-22.1. (Source for this piece of trivia was the June 12, 2009 ABA/AICPA telephone conference with IRS Pooh-Bahs online).
Oh. On the conference call they said they’re not hard-nosed about the deadline in Detroit. So give it your best shot, the IRS dudes said.
Memo to all personnel: if you haven’t sent it in yet, send it. Recommended? Certified mail, return receipt requested.
